DIABETIC FOOT EXAMINATION

There are over 3 million diabetics in the UK and this number is rising. There are a further 300,000 who have not yet been diagnosed. It is an insidious disease which causes an increase of glucose in the blood steam which, if left unchecked, can damage blood vessels, nerves (particularly in the feet and eyes ) and kidneys.

For this reason it is vitally important to have an annual diabetic foot examination to ensure their feet stay healthy. Early diagnosis and treatment is essential to prevent further foot health complications and prevent serious vascular and nerve related problems.

  • Review of the nerves of the feet, including screening for pain, light touch and vibration.

  • Any routine podiatry care which is required such as removal of hard skin and trimming of the nails.

  • Finally, the podiatrist will give advice to maintain the feet in optimal condition and the recommended frequency of podiatry treatments is discussed and agreed with the patient.
